Ave De L ‘Hermite

Renovations to a large family home rethinks connections to site and beyond.

The brief called for the reimagining of neglected external spaces, to make better use of a stately plot in Cape Town’s Western Seaboard. Interventions included a new pedestrian entrance and adjoining courtyard space, a sunroom and new wrap-around balconies with sun protection on the northern aspect of the existing house. A private cinema room was inserted below, with the remaining space reconfigured to serve as a pool house to accompany upgrades to the existing pool.

A restrained palette of materials was developed to unify the interventions, with silver tones in granite and untreated timber emphasised throughout.
