Silvermine Road

Renovation and substantial addition to a coastal property brings space, light and connection to a family home.

Widespread subsidence to one end of the existing house required the demolition of 70% of the structure, making way for the addition of a new entrance and open plan living space. This took the form of a double-volume wing and linking element, exploiting the site’s expansive mountain and ocean views and maximising north orientation.

Bedroom spaces were relocated to the privacy afforded by the existing wing, while the additions were highly glazed to connect the indoor living areas with outdoor spaces, a new pool and Chapman’s Peak beyond. Materials were chosen with warmth and texture in mind to offset the glass, with one side covered in a handmade brick, personally selected by the client from their hometown in Belgium.
